2003 Competition Results

The members of the Amateur Winemakers of Alberta (AAW) judged wines on behalf of the Amateur Winemakers of Canada (AWC) for the 2003 national competition.  There were wines represented by BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia.  We also had visiting judges and spouses from Chilliwack, BC who will be hosting next years competition, and a judge from Manitoba who is the current acting president of the AWC.

We had 22 judges and over 12 stewards to help with the day.  Along with the hard working statistician, head judge and chief steward, all worked hard during the day with very few hiccups. The beer categories were judged by a beer enthusiast club called Marquis de Suds on Tuesday September 9 prior to the wine competition.

For those in Alberta, who in previous provincial competitions always saw who won in each category, the national competition is run a little differently. Instead of first, second, third..., Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded. So for every wine that gets an average score from the three judges with the following scores:

  • 14 or greater but less than 16 - Bronze medal
  • 16 or greater but less than 18 - Silver medal
  • 18 or greater - Gold medal

The benefit of this scoring is that even a great wine, in a category of For example exceptional wines, can win a medal.

There were 187 wines in 14 categories and 18 beers in 3 categories in Total.

A big thank you for all the volunteers who worked during the long day Of judging.  Without them, none of this would be possible.  And for the First time, we actually had more stewards than we could use and had to Turn volunteers away.  Unheard of!  And of course a thank you to all Of the competitors who spent countless hours labouring over their winning Wines and beers.

Special Awards
Best of Brew in Competition
The Best of Brew in Competition entails taking the first place beer from each of the beer categories and judging them to determine the best beer in the entire competition.

The winner is yet to be announced.

Best of Wine in Competition

The Best of Wine in Competition would ordinarily be judged by taking the highest rated wines in the competition, in this case all of the gold medals, and judging them together to determine the best wine of the competition. But since there is only 1 Gold in the competition the selection was obvious.

The best wine in the competition has been awarded to Brian Williams from Niagara Vine-To-Wine Circle guild in Ontario for his Red Bordeaux wine.

Brew Master Of The Year

This is based on points for winning beers in the competition.  A first place rating in any beer category is worth 5 points.  A second place in a beer competition is worth 58% of first place or 2.9 points.  Third place is worth 58% of second place or 1.682 points and so on.  To be Grand Champion Brew Maker, you have to have accumulated the most number of points in the beer classes.

  • Brew Master of the Year: Jack Kouwenhoven British Columbia.

  • Best Beer Entry:  Earl Emberton  Alberta
